Control of Traffic (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

Coming into operation: 19th May 1997

NOW THEREFORE the Department, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 21(1) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

• (1) This Order may be cited as the Control of Traffic (Belfast) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 19th May 1997.

• (2) In this Order, “central reservation” means the raised islands between the carriageways of East Bridge Street, Belfast, which separate the carriageway which is to be used by traffic moving in one direction from the carriageway which is to be used by traffic moving in the other direction.

Prohibition of U-turns

Subject to Article 4, a person shall not cause or permit a vehicle proceeding on the roads specified in column 1 of the Schedule in the direction specified in column 2 to make a U-turn at the locations specified in column 3.

Prohibition of right-hand turn

Subject to Article 4, a person shall not cause or permit a vehicle proceeding in an easterly direction along East Bridge Street, Belfast, to make a right-hand turn through the gap in the central reservation situated between a point approximately 129 metres east of its junction with Stewart Street and a point approximately 132.5 metres east of that junction.

Exemptions

Articles 2 and 3 shall not apply to—

• (a) vehicles being used for fire brigade, ambulance, police or military purposes; or

• (b) a vehicle, the driver of which is acting upon the direction or with the permission of a constable in uniform or of a traffic warden.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order prohibits vehicles proceeding along East Bridge Street, Belfast, in an easterly direction from making a right-hand turn through the gap in the central reservation situated between a point approximately 129 metres east of its junction with Stewart Street and a point approximately 132.5 metres east of that junction.

The Order also prohibits vehicles from making a U-turn when proceeding along Albert Bridge, along part of Albertbridge Road, and at various locations along part of East Bridge Street.

Any person who acts in contravention of the Order shall be guilty of an offence under the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981 and shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 3 on the standard scale (£1,000).

Traffic signs indicating the effect of the Order will in due course be erected on the roads.
