Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (Appropriate Methods of Humane Killing) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

Coming into operation: 9th June 1997

The Department of Health and Social Services for Northern Ireland, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by section 2(9) of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986[^f00001] as adapted by section 29 of that Act and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

• (1) This order may be cited as the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (Appropriate Methods of Humane Killing) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 9th June 1997.

• (2) In this order, “the Act” means the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.

• (3) The Interpretation Act (Northern Ireland) 1954[^f00002] shall apply to this order as it applies to a Measure of the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Amendment of the Act

For Schedule 1 to the Act there shall be substituted the Schedule set out in the Schedule to this order.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

Schedule 1 to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, as adapted for Northern Ireland by section 29 thereof, sets out, for the purposes of the Act, the standard methods of humane killing. This order revises that Schedule. A full explanation of the requirements is contained in a revised Code of Practice entitled “The Humane Killing of Animals under Schedule 1 to the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986” and issued in accordance with section 21 of the 1986 Act on 13th January 1997. Copies can be obtained from The Stationery Office bookshops.
