LegalizeRace Relations (1997 Order) (Commencement) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997
Made: 6th June 1997
The Department of Economic Development, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 1(2) of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997[^f00001] (“the Order”) and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:
Citation and commencement

This Order may be cited as the Race Relations (1997 Order) (Commencement) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997.
Appointed days

- (1) The day appointed for the coming into operation of Article 1 of the Order, in so far as it is not already in operation, shall be 30th June 1997.
- (2) Subject to paragraph (3) the day appointed for the coming into operation of the provisions of the Order specified in column (1) of the Schedule shall be 30th June 1997.
- (3) Where the extent to which any provision of the Order shall come into operation is specified in column (1) of the Schedule, paragraph (2) shall have effect in relation to that provision only to the extent so specified.
- (4) The day appointed for the coming into operation of the remaining provisions of the Order and those provisions specified in column (1) of the Schedule so far as they have not been brought into operation by paragraph (2) shall be 4th August 1997.

Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Order.)
This Order appoints dates for the coming into operation of the provisions of the Race Relations (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. The Order will come into operation in two phases. The first phase on 30th June 1997 will establish the Commission for Racial Equality for Northern Ireland and enable it to make arrangements for the exercise of its functions. The first phase also brings into operation certain provisions authorising the making of Regulations and Orders. The second phase on 4th August 1997 will implement the remaining provisions of the Order — discrimination in the employment field generally, in education and in relation to goods, facilities, services and premises.
