The Department of Finance and Personnel[^f00001] in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 8(1) and (4) of the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977[^f00002], and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Regulations:—

Citation, commencement and interpretation

(1) These Regulations may be cited as the Rates Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 6th February 1997.

(2) In these Regulations “the Order” means the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977.

Time of making and notification of the district rate

(1) Subject to paragraph (2), the date in any year not later than which a district council must make the district rate for the next following year shall be 15th February.

(2) A district council must make the district rate for the year ending 31st March 1998 not later than 28th February 1997.

(3) The period within which a district council must notify the Department under Article 8(4) of the Order of the amount in the pound of the district rate made by the Council, shall be 7 days.

(4) The notification referred to in paragraph (3) shall be in writing

The Rates (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1976[^f00003] are hereby revoked.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations.)

These Regulations revoke and replace the Rates (Amendment) Regulations (N.I.) 1976 by making new provisions prescribing the periods within which district rates for any financial year must be made and notified to the Department of Finance and Personnel. The Regulations make one change of substance. They extend the period within which a district council must make the district rate for the year ending 31st March 1998 so that it ends on 28th February 1997 rather than 15th February of that year.
