Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997

To be laid before Parliament under paragraph 3(3) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974

Coming into operation: 24th March 1997

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 50(4)(a) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981[^f00001] and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation

• (1) This Order may be cited as the Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1997 and shall come into operation on 24th March 1997.

• (2) In this Order “the 1981 Order” means the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981.

Increase of speed limit

The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be increased from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1.

Reduction of speed limit

The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be reduced from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour in relation to the following restricted road, namely Newry Road, Route A25, Camlough, from a point approximately 273 metres east of its junction with Keggall Road, to a point approximately 381 metres east of that junction.

Revocations

The provisions described in Schedule 2 are hereby revoked.

SCHEDULE 1 — Restricted roads on which the speed limit is increased from 30 mph to 40 mph

Comber Road, Route A21, Ballygowan, from a point approximately 43 metres north of its junction with Magherascouse Road, to a point approximately 444 metres north of that junction.

Culmore Road, Route A2, Culmore, County Londonderry, from a point approximately 50 metres south of its junction with Alder Road, Unclassified No. 1118, to a point approximately 541 metres north of its junction with Ardan Road, Unclassified No. 1119.

Glenshane Road, Route A6, Drumahoe, County Londonderry, from a point approximately 275 metres west of its junction with Drumahoe Road, Unclassified No. 1165, to a point approximately 175 metres south-east of its junction with Tirbracken Road, Route C507.

Drumadravy Road, Route B534, Irvinestown, from its junction with Lisnarick Road, Route B534, to a point approximately 310 metres west of that junction.

Lisnarick Road, Route B534, Irvinestown, from a point approximately 260 metres west of its junction with Burfits Hill, Unclassified No. 9079, to its junction with Drumadravy Road, Route B534.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order:

• (a) increases from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1 (Article 2);

• (b) reduces from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour the speed limit on the restricted road specified in Article 3; and

• (c) revokes the provisions described in Schedule 2, which are spent (Article 4).
