The Education Reform (1989 Order) (Commencement No. 9) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998

Made: 19th March 1998

The Department of Education, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Articles 1(3) and (4) of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989[^f00001] and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation

This Order may be cited as the Education Reform (1989 Order) (Commencement No. 9) Order (Northern Ireland) 1998.

Commencement

Article 6 (1) and (2) of and Schedule 2 to the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989[^f00002] in so far as they relate to the compulsory contributory subject, Irish (in Irish speaking schools only), shall come into operation in Irish speaking schools—

• (a) on 31st July 1998 in relation to pupils in the third key stage and the first year of the fourth key stage; and

• (b) on 31st July 1999 in relation to pupils in the second year of the fourth key stage.

Articles 6(3) and 136 shall come into operation on 19th March 1998.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order makes the subject Irish (in Irish speaking schools) compulsory in Irish speaking schools only on a phased basis from 31st July 1998. It becomes compulsory for pupils in key stage 3 and the first year of key stage 4 from that date, and from 31st July 1999 for pupils in the second year of key stage 4.
