Peter Mandelson — One of Her Majesty’s Principal Secretaries of State — 7th December 2000

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations.)

Under paragraph 7 of Schedule 1 to the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000, which came into force on Royal Assent, the Secretary of State initiates the process of appointment of political members to the Northern Ireland Policing Board by requesting the nominating officers of the parties with the greatest number of seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly to nominate members of the Board from amongst their Assembly members. Paragraph 7 enables the Secretary of State, by regulation, to prescribe the period during which the necessary steps have to be taken.

These Regulations prescribe a period of seven days save that, by agreement, the period may be reduced to no less than two days in the case of individual nominations.
