The Department for Regional Development[^f00001] makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 28(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation (Northern Ireland) Order 1997[^f00002] and now vested in it[^f00003]:

Citation and commencement

These Regulations may be cited as The Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008 and shall come into operation on 16th May 2008.

Amendments

(9) Letters and numerals used on a sign shown in diagram 2714 or 2715 shall have the proportions and form shown in Part I of Schedule 13 where those letters and numerals are white and the proportions and form shown in Part II of Schedule 13 where they are black.

13. 2711 The sign shall be internally illuminated.
14. 2714, 2715 The parts of the signs coloured other than black or orange shall be reflectorised in accordance with the provisions of regulation 17. The parts of the signs coloured orange may be so illuminated and may be fluorescent.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

These Regulations further amend the Traffic Signs Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997.

The Regulations prescribe four new signs shown in diagrams 2711 (direction to emergency exit for pedestrians from a tunnel), 2713.1 (distance ahead to emergency telephone in a parking place), 2714 and 2715 (signs for indicating an emergency telephone box) and make several consequential amendments.

These Regulations have been notified to the European Commission pursuant to Directive 98/34/EC of 22nd June 1998 laying down a procedure for the provision of information in the field of technical standards and regulations and of rules on Information Society Services (O.J. No. L204, 21.07.98, p. 37-48) as amended by Directive 98/48/EC of 20th July 1998 (O.J. No. L217, 05.08.98, p. 18-26).
