The Department of Education makes the following Regulations in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 34 of and paragraph 1 of Schedule 1 to the Education (Northern Ireland) Order 1998[^f00001].

Citation and commencement

These Regulations may be cited as the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Constitution) (Amendment No. 2) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015 and shall come into operation on 15th October 2015.

Amendment of the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Constitution) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001

(1) The General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Constitution) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001[^f00002] are amended in accordance with paragraphs (2) and (3).

(2) For regulation 8A substitute—

(8A) (1) The term of office of an elected member whose term of office is due to expire on 14th October 2015 shall be extended for a period of six months. (2) Where the term of office has been extended under paragraph (1), the reference to “four years” in regulation 6(5) shall be read as if it were a reference to “five years and six months”. (3) The term of office of a member appointed by the Department under regulation 7(d) whose term of office is due to expire on 14th October 2015 shall be extended until 29thFebruary 2016. (4) The term of office of a member mentioned in paragraph (1) or (3) shall end on 14thOctober 2019.

(3) In regulations 4(2) (eligibility for election, appointment and to vote in elections) and 8(4) (term of office), omit sub-paragraph (a).

Revocation

Regulation 2(3) of the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Constitution) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2014[^f00003] is revoked.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Regulations)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (Constitution) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001 to extend the term of office of elected Council members whose term would otherwise have ended on 14th October 2015 by a further six months (regulation 2(2)). That regulation also extends the term of office of members appointed by the Department of Education until 29th February 2016. In both cases the term of office of members will end on 14th October 2019. Regulation 2(3) makes minor amendments.

Regulation 3 makes a consequential revocation.
