The Department of Justice, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 22 of the Protection from Stalking Act (Northern Ireland) 2022[^f00001], makes the following Order.

Citation

This Order may be cited as the Protection from Stalking (2022 Act) (Commencement) Order (Northern Ireland) 2023.

Appointed day

2

The day appointed for the coming into operation of sections 6 to 17 of the Protection from Stalking Act (Northern Ireland) 2022 is 19th October 2023.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

This Order brings sections 6 to 17 of the Protection from Stalking Act (Northern Ireland0 2022 (“the Act”) into operation on 19th October 2023.

Section 6 to 16 of the Act makes provision from Stalking Protection Orders to provide protection to a person at risk of stalking.

They will enable early police intervention pre-conviction, to address stalking behaviours before they become entrenched, or escalate n severity and to protect victims from more serious harm.

Section 17 allows the Department to publish guidance on the operation of Stalking Protection Orders.
