The Police Trainee (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2025

Coming into operation: 24th March 2025

The Department of Justice, in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 36 and 41 of the Police (Northern Ireland) Act 2000 [^f00001], and of all other powers enabling it in that behalf, and after consulting the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Police Association for Northern Ireland in accordance with section 41(6) of that Act [^f00002], hereby makes the following Regulations:

Citation, commencement, interpretation and application

• (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Police Trainee (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2025.

• (2) These Regulations shall come into operation on 24th March 2025.

• (3) In these Regulations “the 2001 Regulations” means the Police Trainee Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001[^f00003].

Conditions for appointment as constable

In regulation 3(3)(a) of the 2001 Regulations [^f00004], after “or such longer” omit the words “or shorter”.

In regulation 11(2A) of the 2001 Regulations [^f00005], after “police trainee under regulation” omit “3(3)(a) or”.

Explanatory note

(This note is not part of the Order)

EXPLANATORY NOTE

These Regulations amend the Police Trainee Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2001 to repeal the emergency provisions introduced in 2020 to allow the Chief Constable to impose different requirements as to the period of service and training for police trainees in response to COVID-19. This is in line with the commitment to retain the provisions for only as long as necessary to address the ongoing pandemic.
