Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Order in Council)
Explanatory Note
This Order amends the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands (Territorial Sea) Order 1989 (S.I. 1989/1995[^f00003]) (“the 1989 Order”). That Order specifies a series of points around South Georgia and other islands in its immediate vicinity, which are joined by a series of straight baselines from which the breadth of the territorial sea is measured. The Maritime Zone established around the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands by the Proclamation (Maritime Zone) No. 1 of 1993[^f00004] is also measured from these baselines.
This Order amends the 1989 Order to revise the co-ordinates of those points, to rename some points and to add a new point. This follows a new survey and the publication of new charts of the area.
The baseline along the coast between points 20 and 21 in the Schedule is measured from the low-water line as set out in Article 3(1) of the 1989 Order.
The limits of the territorial sea derived from these baselines are shown on Admiralty Charts published by the UK Hydrographic Office and obtainable from agents and distributors.
